ABOUT US
OCC Church started as a small group Bible study. Rick’s parents, Pastor Richard Shinn and his wife, Akiko, had a burden to establish a church which ministered to the Chinese in San Jose and the surrounding areas. On July 4, 1971, we moved into our first storefront property, on Jackson St. in Japantown.
About a year later, we moved into a different building around the corner on 6th Street. This meeting place would be our home for the next 30 years. During this time, we witnessed God building up our congregation and leading us as a church family though many challenges and victories!
Then, in 2002, God moved in a miraculous way. Our 6th Street property caught on fire as a result of some homeless people a few doors down who were trying to stay warm on a very cold spring night. But God already knew this would happened, and He had a plan. A few months before, Pastor Shinn reunited with an old friend who was pastoring a church in Milpitas. The night the fire happened, this gracious pastor invited our church members to begin meeting at his church, Calvary Assembly of God, the very next day. God had arranged for us not even to miss a Sunday!
Eight years later, on Thanksgiving Sunday, 2010, we held our first service in our current facility on Winchester Boulevard, near Santana Row in San Jose. Incredibly, the Lord’s hand was seen in the way the property was renovated and the timing perfect for us to get approval for its purchase. If you ever come by for a visit, be sure to ask one of our church members how God worked everything out!
